What are Maori tattoos?

One of the many types of tattoos that are gaining much popularity nowadays is Maori tattoos. These types of tattoos consist of bold lines and geographical patterns which are prevalent in the culture of the Maori people in New Zealand where these designs are originally found. They are usually placed on the face to signify a person’s tribal identity. These include the tribal history and the symbol that best describes the person’s overall personal status and characteristics. In a sense, Maori tattoos generally tell a very good story of a very proud cultural race.

Ta moko as Maori tattoos are alternatively called were usually carved on the face of the individual and has the tendency to enhance his facial features and reduce his flaws. It is like installing a permanent mask on the person so that it will become his face. Men are the more common recipients of this tattoo as it signifies his experience and status in life. This is quite noticeable especially on tribal chieftains, shamans and elite warriors. Women on the other hand, are only allowed small Maori tattoos on their lips, chin and nostrils.

However, the open-mindedness of the world has led many people to make use of Maori tattoos just because they like its appearance. Also, this led to the Maori tattoos being placed not only the face but also on other parts of the body. This is evident in the case of many celebrities and well – known people.  This has led to the annoyance of the Maori people who feels that their cultural tradition is not being respected. Hopefully, this can be resolved in the future as the world is becoming more aware of the importance of keeping many cultural traditions alive.
