Tattooing the art of making permanent marks on the human body with a variety of designs and pictures of one’s choice dates back to pre historic period, that is evident from various old tombs and legends of early civilizations.

The ancient art form of tattooing was practiced by a few raw hands with little or no training in unhealthy surroundings with unhygienic tools.

It has since become a fine art being practiced inside the state of the art tattoo studios by well trained artists making use of electronic tattoo machines and hygienic and sterilized needles and tools.

Tattooing has become a lucrative industry and the number of people that get tattooed is ever increasing.

The innovative tattoo artists of today make lasting impressions and add more color to the tattoos by their unique and creative designs, than by the ink used for tattooing.  They continue to innovate and explore better and unique designs and symbols to meet the ever growing demand of their clientele.

The choice of the design or symbol in tattooing may look quite simple but the fact is otherwise. Whatever the design or symbol one chooses he has to live with the same for the rest of his life and as such assumes great significance.

The early tattoo designs that were more or less marks of identity of a group or sect had little or no creativity. They were made in total disregard or disrespect for the taste of the individuals that carried them. In due course of time individuals or groups like sailors and pirates had unique symbols, considered as lucky or protective charms, tattooed in their bodies like anchors, nautical stars and a plethora of other fortune bringers. As tattooing developed in to an art form people were offered a wide variety of creative designs and imaginative drawings.
Tattoo lettering perhaps has its origin from the initials of a person, a group or a gang and today it is one of the most popular tattoo designs the world over. The advent of numerous varieties of fonts of the English alphabet, and the vanishing of the barriers of language, made the tattoo lettering increasingly popular. People choose tattoo lettering in different fonts and in different languages like Chinese, Japanese Spanish, old English, tribal etc.

Many modern day celebrities have contributed for the popularity of the old English lettering. Eminem and David Beckman are two notable personalities among them. Some of the celebrated tattoo artist of the country also specialized in this field. Mr. cartoon the most popular and successful artist of the country is the first to mention among them. In the old English lettering style that he follows one can always find the boxy letters always in black color and with a touch of gothic style and feeling.

Tribal tattoo lettering is unique with bold and black lines, intricate patterns, dense curves and very sharp points. Yet another style is the Celtic lettering. Chinese characters are the most sought after letters today. The mysterious looking letters with its beautiful look are being preferred by many.

The Letters convey many meanings; it may be the old style of initials of self or a dear one or representing an ideology or group like the infamous F.F.L. It may also be a word or phrase most appropriate to the part of the body where it is tattooed like the mischievous word ‘sinner ‘ anywhere in the genital region giving special connotation to the tattoo.

Lastly and mostly letters may also be the names or initials of one’s children, of lost ones, parents or even the love or the loved ones. However a word of caution for the names of love that is being tattooed; many seek more than one cover up for the name/s that was dear to them once. It may not be painful for one to change the love, but it is not so in the case of tattoos.
