Not all tattoos fall under the heading of body art, because not all tattoos are created by artists. If you want body art, you should choose a tattoo artist that can show you examples of the work he has done. If you want your tattoos to be artwork, don't look for a bargain basement price.
Tattooing involves penetrating the skin. This is another reason to beware of cheap tattoo parlors. Any penetration of the skin can result in infection and doctor's are expensive. Infection can ruin your tattoo and leave scars. Trained tattoo artists follow proper antiseptic protocol.
Folks that are afraid of needles probably shouldn't consider body art unless its temporary. Designs can be put on the surface of the skin using decals or henna dye. The designs will wear off, probably in about a week. You can always use another decal or have an artist in henna apply a new "tattoo". This allows you to change your mind if you don't like the tattoo.
Tattoos are created by injecting ink under the skin with special needles. The penetration of the needles is shallow, but it can result in some pain or discomfort. How much pain may depend on the area of the body where the tattoo is applied. In areas with a lot of nerve endings like the hand, the needles will cause more pain. Areas like the hip have fewer nerves and will be less painful.
Choosing body art is half the fun. You can go online and find pictures of tats that you like and bring them to your artist. Most artists can work from a picture. You can also choose from a selection of pictures displayed by your artist, or you can ask him to create a design just for you. He'll draw a picture of the design for you before starting the actual work.
The next decision is location. If you work in a conservative atmosphere, it may be best to place your tattoo in an area that is normally covered by business attire. Retail salespeople and office workers usually need to keep their tattoos covered at work. Not everyone appreciates this art form. If it won't create a problem at work, put the tattoo wherever you would like it.
What size do you want your tattoo to be? Some people prefer a small inconspicuous tattoo, while others like to cover their entire bodies with art work. If you choose a large design with multiple colors, you may have to have it completed over several sessions. Plan on spending at least two hours for each session. This type of tattoo requires a lot of detail from the artist and a lot of patience from you.
Professional tattoo artists take pride in their work and are careful with their equipment. They may ask you about allergies, or request an opportunity to test your skin. They don't want you to take any serious health risks. They are aware that rare individuals can have an adverse reaction to the ink.
If you've considered all the angles and still want that tattoo, think of your body as a canvass. You can have tattoos anywhere you want and you can have as many tattoos as you want. Choose your designs and your artist carefully though, these won't wash off, and removing tattoos is difficult and expensive and can leave a scar. Tattoo removal involves the use of a laser and can only be performed by a board certified plastic or dermatological surgeon. You thought getting the tat was expensive.
